Does obesity prevent prostate cancer?

Funny article in the news today. It appears that obesity prevents prostate cancer. Sounds good, right? Wrong. Being obese prevents prostate cancer, but if you do get prostate cancer you're more likely today.

It sounds odd, but according to Dr. Par Stattin of Umeå University said the following:

The suggestion that obese people are less likely to develop prostate cancer is provocative. But they may be at a higher risk of a more aggressive form of cancer that is less reliant on testosterone

There's always a downside, right?

Usually I consider these reports are one offs, but Dr. Stattin has some interesting past research. For instance, some prior research indicated that increased glucose levels in women cause cancer.

Dr Stattin said at the time:

The increase in risk of cancer associated with high blood glucose levels is caused by the concomitant high insulin levels. But an increased risk of cancer was not seen in men because of the effect of high glucose levels on testosterone, believed to be a stimulating factor for prostate cancer initiation and early growth.

Notice the response concerning testosterone in both areas.
